In February 2005 we 'adopted' DeeJay, a 3.5 year old spayed Rottweiler. As most of you know there had been a lot of soul searching for a couple years re getting a 'stablemate' for Clancy- what dog and when is the best time.
In December 2003 Michelle Norwood of RNF Kennels called me re DeeJay (previously known as 'Zyra'). After having been with her for a couple months she felt that DeeJay had the 'right' ingredients to make a good Assistance dog. However at the time we were not ready to commit to another dog (maybe 'scared' was more like it). So she was then adopted by another Frederictonian..
DeeJay is a big girl (90+ lbs) and quite intimidating looking (for those that are scared of Rotts). She is 25 lbs heavier than Clancy) but is very willing to let Clancy take charge. Eldon describes DeeJay as a being 'strong as a bull but gentle as a lamb'. The two girls are best of pals. I think Clancy has had more exercise in this past month than all of the past winters put together. We planned for their sleeping arrangements but they figured out a 'schedule' by themselves. DeeJay's deep sounding bark may be deceiving but she is a very loving dog. How she loves having her head and ears scratched (what dog doesn't). Then oh so gently up comes the paw and then her body slides down to the floor for extra rubbing on her belly Even Clancy doesn't show this much affection. My 83 year-old mother thinks she is the greatest. DeeJay is oh so quick to learn her commands - of course Clancy helps her by showing how things are done. One of the most important commands in our small home is 'move'. This she now does almost automatically without being nervous re the electric wheelchair. As to wondering if DeeJay is 'the' dog, there has been no hesitation re that 'gut' feeling.
Now for the 'next' step special training re being an 'Assistance Dog.' Terry Pye did such an excellent job with Clancy many years ago that he has received the 'call' again. In fact Terry recently trained another dog for such work - a Giant Schnauzer for a girl in Oromocto. My main concern of course is DeeJay's strength while out 'walking' with the scooter but I guess that is where the special training comes into affect.
Around the house Clancy is my 'right hand'. I couldn't be in the house alone without her. This special girl of mine still follows me every step/wheel I make. If DeeJay can bond with me only half as much as Clancy does than I have been blessed with two very special dogs.
Michelle Norwood: "I am so glad that my orginal evaluation stayed true on Dee-Jay. From time to time you have a special dog come into your lives and you just see all the signs of greatness. Gentle, Patient, and very stable temperment wise. I am sure she will work very well for you.".
If you are looking for that special Rottweiler to join your heart and home, please check with Michelle and her Rotts for adoption.
January 24, 2008: Clancy peacefully passed away.
We will always love her and miss her terribly - she set a high standard for DeeJay to follow.
I did meet the dog with her 'new' owner - what a 'sweetie'. This owner as well felt that DeeJay was 'destined' for a 'higher calling' and so due to her eventual household circumstances asked us on Groundhog Day, a year later, if we were still interested. No, no not at this time of year but something told us that 'yes' this is the right time.
